FAQ

How many tiles will I need to order?
We can measure the area for you if required. If you do want to order them yourself we always recommend that you purchase 10% more to allow for cutting. As most suppliers will refund what tiles you do not use.

How long will the job take?
This is a hard question to answer. If all of the tiles and materials are there and you have enough, If the floor is fully prepared and a lot of other factors to be honest. We can tile 50 square metres in a day. However this is very unusual scenario because you have to take into account cutting of tiles, room temperatures, the tiles themselves.

Will you clean up after you have finished?
We always clean up every day and always use dustsheets from the entrance of your home to the work place and anywhere else you request. We always use either a skip which is removed at the end of each job, or we will remove rubbish at the end of each day in our vehicles and for an extra clean we can organise contract cleaners to undertake dusting and wall cleaning from Kennedy Kleaning a local commercial cleaning company we use.

Are you insured?
Yes we are insured. We hold a full public liability insurance and damage insurance up to the value of £5,000,000. We have however never needed to claim in the last twenty years of service.

How can I tell a good quality tile from a bad quality tile?
Tile quality varies significantly. Tiles are rated for durability and use. Lower grade tiles are suitable for wall applications. However, a higher rated tile is required for floors or exterior applications. One of the main factors that need to be checked for tile quality these days is the size of the tiles. Good quality tiles are all the same size, but a poor quality tile can be as much as 5mm difference in sizes (not thickness).

What is the difference between Porcelain & Ceramic tiles?
Porcelain tiles are a much higher grade of tile. They are made from finer clay and are fired at a higher temperature. They are much harder and highly durable tile, making them impervious to water absorption. However there are many designs possible in ceramic that are not available in Porcelain. This is due to the different firing process involved.

What is the best tiling surface?
The best tiling surface needs to be clear of all dust, oils and greases. With the products that are on the market today you can tile to most surfaces. We always recommend that all surfaces be sealed with a PVA sealer before tiling commences.

Why do you insist on supplying your own adhesives and Grouts?
We only us BAL products as these have proven to provide the best service and be the most reliable, Their products supply a Ten year Guarantee which we have never needed to claim on as we have never had any problems. It is not the cheapest on the Market but it is the best.

Why does some grouts have sand in them and some do not?
Sanded grout is mainly used when spacing is more than 4mm and on floors. It is more durable due to Silica sand that it contains. It hold up to much more foot traffic and use than unsanded grout. Unsanded grout is using when the spacing between tiles is less than 3mm. Because of the lack of Silica sand in it, it will penetrate the void between the tiles much better. We can advise you on what is the best grout to use.

Why do you need to seal natural tiles?
Natural tile are sealed for three main reasons, Firstly, this makes the tiles waterproof, thus preventing water penetration to the sub surface which in turn will make the tile blow from the walls. Secondly, sealing the tiles prevents and dirt, grease or oils from staining and marking the tiles, thus loosing the beauty of the natural tiles.
Thirdly and by no means least, sealing the tiles brings out the beauty and elegance of the colours and patterns within the tiles.

Is natural stone hard to maintain?
All natural stones are porous weather they are highly polished or not. They all require sealing usually once a year and should be cleaned with a pH balanced cleaner regularly. Most people don’t mind the added maintenance because there really is no other way to get the effect of warmth, feeling and look of a natural stone.
We do provide a service where we can visit you each year to re-seal your natural stone tiles, please contact us for more details
